Dancing Hexies Quilt in Kona Color of the Year
Another year, another fun color from Kona! I always look forward to making a quilt that shows off their annual selection, and this might be my favorite yet: Wander is a lovely shade of green that makes me think of a dewy meadow.
For this color, I used my newest quilt pattern yet: Dancing Hexies!
(Rest assured, these hexies are not dancing in the clouds… if you know what I mean ;)
The quilt pattern makes the most of the 4-in-1 Hexie ruler, and through a surprisingly simple assembly creates the illusion of shapes wobbling back and forth.
Personally, I see them as flowers swaying in the wind, especially with this color palette! I wanted to use colors that would be visually interesting alongside Wander, so these yellows and pinks and blues sprouted to life to make the happy quilt you see now!
The look is aided by the quilting, where I used slightly brighter green to bring everything together, and give that slight contrast, like you might see when sun hits tall blades of grass. My binding was also just a little off from one of the pinks used for the hexagons, giving that fun wobbly feeling to the whole piece.
If you’re someone who likes to match their quilting thread as closely to the background as possible, though, you can try AURIFIL 2890.
Really, the idea was to highlight the cheerful vibe that Wander gives me; a care-free stroll with no real destination.
I’ll talk more about the pattern soon, but as usual, it comes in various sizes, no y seams, and uses precuts, so you can put any collection of fabrics to dance!
