Scrappy Liberty Hexagon
If you’ve followed me for any amount of time, you’ll know that my biggest fabric obsession is Liberty and the threads that give me most joy are Aurifil.
Now, being an Aurifil artisan has encouraged me to try new things, test myself, and really have fun sewing. Well this project is part of that adventure, the combination of all my favorite fabrics and threads into one beautiful piece.
This started the size of a coaster, by the way. But the more I sewed, the more I liked it, and so I just… kept going! The formula for this hexagon is pretty straight-forward: each strip just about an inch bigger than its equal in the previous layer.
So, in theory, you can just keep adding more and more until… well… so… I used 75 different fabrics. And it was awesome.
Better yet, I got to make the most of my Aurifil threads by letting them shine at what they do best. I used their 80wt 100% cotton to piece, and it was flawless, the perfect choice for these thin and delicate fabrics. Look at how it just disappears like a dream.
But it would be no fun if we didn’t get to see some threads too, so I took Aurifil’s Marakesh variegated 40wt, which is great for top stitching, and a variegated rainbow that served to be the perfect visible top stitch and lovely finishing touch.
This is one of the reasons I love Aurifil so much: the absolute versatility of their threads makes it so they always have what I need for any project I come up with!
I hope you enjoy staring at this project as much as I do, and this is a reminder to use all your stored favorites, because if you craft them into something, you can look at them all the more!
Happy sewing!
